A few days ago, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (hereinafter referred to as "China Automobile Association") released the latest operation of the automobile industry. In the first quarter of this year, China's automobile production and sales completed 6.352 million and 6.484 million vehicles respectively, up 81.7 percent and 75.6 percent respectively over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 7.2 and 0.6 percentage points lower than that from January to February. Compared to the January-March 2019 data (low production and sales in 2020 due to the epidemic), auto production and sales in the first quarter of this year increased by 0.3 and 1.8 percent year-on-year, respectively, a 2.6 and 0.9 percentage points narrower than in January-February. Although production and sales are still lower than in 2019 and have not yet returned to positive growth, the narrowing decline reflects some potential for recovery.
The overall environment is good.
The China Automobile Association believes that at present, China's epidemic prevention and control and economic development continue to improve, industry and exports grow faster, investment and consumption steadily recovered, employment and prices are generally stable, basic livelihood security is strong, the national economy continues to recover steadily, these provide a guarantee for the recovery of the automobile industry growth.
However, it should be noted that the recent sharp rise in raw material prices has significantly increased the cost pressure of manufacturing enterprises, and the tight supply of chips and other parts will continue to affect the production rhythm of enterprises. Although the tight supply of chips is expected to be alleviated in the second quarter, these factors may bring great uncertainty to the development of China's automobile industry.
While China's automobile industry as a whole shows a good recovery growth trend, the business performance of the enterprise side is also remarkable. According to the first-quarter sales data of the top 10 automobile groups counted by the China Automobile Association, the sales of the top 10 enterprise groups rose sharply from January to March, with SAIC and FAW rising 111.7 per cent and 105.9 per cent respectively.
The first quarter performance forecast released by Changan Automobile shows that in the first quarter, Changan Automobile is expected to achieve a net profit of 0.7 billion to 1 billion yuan attributable to shareholders of listed companies; it is expected to achieve a net profit of 0.6 billion to 0.85 billion yuan after deducting non-recurring gains and losses; and the same period in 2020 A loss of 1.793 billion yuan. Changan Automobile said that the profit growth was mainly due to the company's product sales growth, product structure optimization, continuous improvement of independent business profitability and steady improvement of joint venture business profitability.
FAW Jiefang's first-quarter performance forecast also shows that it is expected to achieve a net profit of 1.65 billion -1.83 billion yuan attributable to shareholders of listed companies in the first quarter, an increase of 804.14-902.77 percent over the same period last year, and a profit of 0.182 billion billion yuan in the same period in 2020. FAW Jiefang said that during the reporting period, the domestic commercial vehicle market continued to maintain rapid growth, and the company's main product production and sales increased significantly year-on-year. In the first quarter, the company sold 191000 vehicles, up 76.8 year on year.
Commercial vehicles, new energy vehicles to achieve high growth
The growth of the commercial vehicle market is significantly better than that of passenger cars, which is the most significant feature of my country's automobile industry. Statistics from the China Automobile Association show that from January to March, the production and sales of commercial vehicles completed 1.397 million and 1.408 million respectively, an increase of 76.9 percent and 77.3 percent respectively over the same period last year, and the growth rate narrowed by 19.4 and 8.9 percentage points respectively from January to February. Compared with the data from January to March 2019, the production and sales of commercial vehicles increased by 26.1 and 26.9 respectively, of which the growth rate of production narrowed by 1.8 percentage points compared with January to February, and the growth rate of sales volume expanded by 2.4 percentage points. In March, the heavy and light trucks in the trucks performed strongly, and the production and sales reached a record high. Among them, the sales of heavy trucks reached a record 230000, driving the production and sales of trucks and commercial vehicles to a record high.
Shi Jianhua, deputy secretary-general of the China Automobile Association, said that policy factors such as the switching of emission regulations and the control of excess limits are the factors driving the rapid growth of commercial models such as heavy trucks and light trucks. On July 1 this year, commercial vehicles will implement the national six emission standards. The switching of emission standards has accelerated the upgrading of related models and promoted sales growth. At the same time, China's effective epidemic prevention and control, infrastructure investment and a good business development environment are also driving the growth of commercial vehicle sales. Driven by these factors, the commercial vehicle market represented by heavy trucks will continue to break through.
In March, my country's new energy vehicle production and sales also achieved substantial growth, setting a new historical record for the month. In March, the production and sales of new energy vehicles completed 216000 and 226000 respectively, an increase of 2.5 times and 2.4 times respectively over the same period last year. From January to March, the production and sales of new energy vehicles completed 533000 and 515000 respectively, an increase of 3.2 times and 2.8 times respectively over the same period last year.
It is worth noting that relevant agencies previously predicted that the production and sales of new energy vehicles in my country will reach about 1.8 million this year, and based on the data of the first quarter, the expectation of 1.8 million vehicles may be somewhat conservative.
